As I have mentioned before, i will be letting you all know about all the new vocabularies i have learned in Construction and Materials I class. So today along with the new vocabularies i'll also be mentioning about building construction out of different materials. Starting with concrete...
* When we look at a wall we usually see finishing materials such as wallpapers or paint or stones and etc.. But what we also should know is the materials behind those finishing materials.
* Criteria for Evaluating Building Materials :
1- Embodied Energy
2- Renewable Materials
3- Recycled Content
4- Durability
5- Low VOC and Toxicity
6- Moisture Problem
7- Water Conservation
8- Maintainability
9- Potential for reuse and recycle
10-Reusability
- Definitions Components and Manufacturing process of Concrete :
Cement; Clinker ( clay + cracked limestone + iron ore + sand + (HEAT) + Gypsum
Drinking Water; It should be mixed with water to gain its adhesive character.
Aggregates; Fine and coarse foamed slag exfoliated vermiculite, ashes and perlite.
Concrete can be made and formed
1- On building site.
2- In a factory or away from its site (Pre-fabricated, Pre-cast) Concrete.
3- Structural Properties - Compressive strength - .
4- Pre-Curing stage
* If the amount of cement is more you have better concrete, so it depends on water and the ratio between water and concrete. *
My New Vocabulary List:
Aggregate: Collection of lumps, piles.
Curing Time: Meaning it is beginning to get solid and that period means curing time.
Compressive strength: Means basically you can jump on it, park on it and it won't break or get harm in any way.
Carbon foot print mean ( CFP): Total set of greenhouse gas (GHS) emissions caused by an organization, event, or product.
Cradle to Grave : There will be no use out of that energy anymore.
VS.
Cradle to Cradle Materials: Maintaining the energy by recycling it or with other reusable ways.
By Energy it means; Water, Electricity, Gas, or Special Granites from Italy and etc... Making the material usable until it gets usable. Energy is used for some selected materials.
* Concrete can be a weak material, if a car passes on soil and if the soil is soft the shape of it will change and they'd have to redo the roads. *
Green material: Material while producing will not cause air pollution or less. Will not cause any health problems.
Reinforcement: Means steel.
Thermal Mass: Also known as, Passive design, Concrete absorbs the heat it radiates back to space meaning it will heat the space.
*You can use concrete to heat up the space if you place it right.*
Organic Compounds (VOC): They can cause health problems and it is easily noticeable with a smell they cause. ( 'Derbi' - some kind of glue to stick two leathers especially shoe stores use this - and also 'patex' can be an example)

You should write letter 'I' in capitals if it is referring you.
'Building stuff ' should change. İn other words it is not good the use the word 'stuff' İt is ' Building Construction Material'!!
