Types of Non-Load Bearing Partitions

* Relatively Permanent

* Demountable

* Movable

1. Relatively Permanent: Although, they are capable of being easily dismantled, they are not demountable in the strict sense of the term.

- Used within skeleton frame structural systems.

- No foundation is necessary.

TYPES ;

They are lighter in weight and/or smaller in cross-sectional size.

*Brick ( one or half brick walls) or CMU

Relatively Permanent

* Stud and Sheet - Wood Sheet

Plasterboard Products: 250 – 300 cm x 120 cm x 9.5, 12.5, 15, 18mm

Types of Plasterboards:

- Multi-purpose (Flex Plasterboard) Water Resistant Plasterboard

- Fire Resistant Plasterboard

(Use of Glass fiber additive)

- Flexible (Herform Plasterboard)

Wood Sheet Products:

- Plywood

- Chipboard

- MDF

- OSB

- Cemented Chipboard

(çimentolu yonga levha in Turkish)

2. Demountable Partitions:

Example: Timber Frame Panels

Timber Flush Panels;

- Solid core

- Skeleton core

- Cellular core

Movable Partitions and Screens:

- Sliding Partitions

- Siding/Folding Partitions

- Folding Partitions

- Sliding/Folding Partitions

Properties:

1. Prefabricated Rapid installation.

2. Designed for easy dismantling and reassembly ( clip on-off panels )

3. Heating, lighting and decorative schemes must be suitably designed for flexible planning.

4. Use of a “planning grid” or modular planning.

5. Flexibility

Demountable vs. Relatively Permanent Partitions have differences which are;

1. Demountable partitions are made and partially assembled in a factory then delivered to the site as a kit of parts. Relatively permanent partitions are built on site.

2. Demountable partitions are specifically designed for rapid, simple installation, dismantling and reassembly. Relatively permanent partitions cannot easily be reused, they are broken down and thrown away in case they are not required.

3. Movable Partitions and Screens:

Sliding Partitions:

* Panels slide in tracks.

* A space may be required to house for the panels opening position.

Folding Partitions:

* Consist of fabric (usually pvc) attached to a framework of metal hinges.

* Lighter weight than sliding/folding systems.

* Top rollers and top track only.

Screens:

* Often used for open-plan interiors or for temporary displays.

* They are usually less than full room height.

* They are either free-standing or built up to form corners to provide more structural stability.

Non-load-bearing Partitions:

- Carry only their own weight and fitments on it.

- No need for foundation if their thickness is less than 20 cm.

- Their stability against overturning can be related with their slenderness ratio

Load-bearing Partitions:

- Foundation or a beam is required under 20 cm. and over.

- Their stability for crushing and buckling related with slenderness ratio are discussed in the walls

- Act as stiffeners for a building for lateral loads.
